Labour: pause council restructure to focus on Covid19

Leader of Northamptonshire County Council Labour Group, Councillor Bob Scott has released a statement on behalf of his group. In it, Labour councillors call for the restructure of local government in the County to be paused so that the focus of leadership, staff and resources can be used to deal with the Covid 19 crisis.

Councillor Scott said, “We wish to make it clear in these very difficult times, all energy and all resource should be focused on dealing with the Covid 19 crisis. Our priority must be meeting the needs of our most vulnerable households and looking after all essential workers”.

Councillor Mick Scrimshaw, Leader of Kettering Borough Council Labour Group added, “The elections scheduled for next month to the new shadow council for North Northamptonshire were rightly cancelled due to the current national Covid 19 emergency but work on organising that new council next year will continue despite the huge pressures council staff and other public sector organisations are currently facing”.

Councillor Scrimshaw continued, “It seems crazy to me and the government need to postpone the start date because setting up brand new councils in the way proposed is already a massive job and to try to do this while the country goes thorough the biggest emergency since World War Two is ridiculous. All efforts need to be directing at the current crisis and having senior management distracted in the way is simply not sensible”.
